Wet steam turbine technology to deliver carbon-free electricity from waste & surplus heat


Saxlund International, a leader in biomass combustion and energy from waste (EfW) and part of the Opcon energy and environmental group, will market and support a new, wet steam turbine (WST), power solution designed to produce emission-free electricity from saturated or superheated steam.

Saxlund International, a leader in biomass combustion and energy from waste (EfW) and part of the Opcon energy and environmental group, will market and support a new, wet steam turbine (WST), power solution designed to produce emission-free electricity from saturated or superheated steam.

Developed by sister company Opcon Energy Systems around a twin screw Lysholm turbine, the Opcon Powerbox WST enables the production between 200kW – 800kW of electricity  from low grade steam, which would not be possible in a traditional steam turbine. The Powerbox WST replaces steam pressure reduction valves in existing process steam applications to produce emission-free electricity. Another application is the utilisation of low grade steam from industrial processes to generate energy instead of releasing this into the environment.

 

“There is a significant opportunity to help process industries and medium size power generators in the UK to capitalise on waste heat to drive efficiencies and savings”, explains Matt Drew, managing director, Saxlund International. “Waste and residual heat from industrial processes are significant energy resources but are frequently neglected. In many instances costly cooling solutions are required when waste heat could be generating electricity. Small scale production of valuable electricity from waste sources will benefit many industries where energy costs are becoming prohibitive and with a return of investment between 2 and 4 years it is an attractive investment.”

 

Complementing Saxlund’s combustion and EfW solutions, the Opcon Powerbox WST is available as a standalone skip mounted solution designed to run side-by-side with existing energy or process facilities to capitalise on waste heat. It can also be fully integrated within new industrial process  solutions, helping to produce on-site emission-free electricity.

 

A number of installations are operating in Sweden with many thousands of hours of successful operation and a new installation is being carried out this year with an upgrading of an EON district heating plant.
