Sludge Handling in the Waste Water Industry

“Live bottom” storage silos are the preferred solution for materials with characteristics not permitting flow.  “Live” refers to the design of the silo where all material will fall eventually fall into contact with a discharge mechanism. This will physically move it to a location where it can be discharged.  Silo edges have to be vertical, if not divergent, to ensure no material hang up or bridging can occur.


The Sliding Frame and Push Floor systems (originally patented by Saxlund) are particularly efficient solutions to this problem. With both Saxlund solutions, the whole bottom face of the flat floored silo is swept by the reciprocating action of wedge shaped blade.  Each sweep charges material towards a drop chute in the center of the container in which a discharge metering screw will typically be positioned. The complete charging of the screw trough permits a controlled amount of material to be accurately fed into the next process.


Sludge has the benefit of acting as a lubricant aiding the action of the sliding frame. Hydraulic control of the Sliding Frame drive means forces are restricted to safe levels and any foreign objects which may have got into the process are not pinched in the system.  This reliability and resulting longevity has been one of the reasons why the Waste Water Industry has adopted the solution so readily in a number of configurations.


The Push Floor and Sliding Frame discharge machines have been engineered and refined over the years to a level that allows us to claim to be market leader in sludge handling. The latest generations of both the Push Floor and Sliding Frame now have new patents.  This combined with our control engineering, allows us to offer the Industry a complete system. The most regular configurations for sludge handling include:

 

Truck Reception Systems

 

 

Saxlund’s Sliding Frame Truck Reception features a silo mounted on a baseframe set within a pit such that the payload of a truck can be tipped in one movement into the bottom.  An hydraulic lid raises and lowers to be seal the delivery against weather and odour escape.  Material is reclaimed by the action of the Sliding Frame loading a Discharge Screw trough and fed into a progressive cavity pump or directly into a silo pump.

 

Truck Loading Systems

The Sludge Storage Silo is supported on legs providing clearance for a truck to pass under. The silo is progressively filled over time by a chain, screw or pumped connection.  When convenient the silo is discharged via a Sliding Frame and Discharge Screw.  This configuration permits a small continuous discharge feed to be massed over time and then discharged into a truck in a relatively quick turn round time.

 

Process Feed Silos

This feed silo acts as a buffer to a “flow sensitive” downstream process by receiving material deliveries from a Reception or Indigenous Stream and providing metered feed to a process thereafter (ie an Anaerobic Digester).  The silo can be fed by Chain, Screw or Pumped flanged connection. It will typically be mounted on legs (dependent on size) providing access to the operator for servicing the discharge equipment. 
All our silo systems share the requirement to; deliver to, convey from, meter feed to or dose into a particular process thereafter. Consequently, Saxlund International has developed a range of special equipment to handle sticky sludge cake materials including Screw Conveyors (Centreless, Ribbon and Shafted types), Chain Conveyors and Solids Handling Pumps.

Truck LoadingStorage Silo - Farnham STW

The Thames Water Trident Alliance chose Saxlund International to supply this prestigious and unusual limed sludge cake handling system at their Farnham site

 

 

Truck Loading Storage Silo - Scarborough STW

Saxlund won the contract to supply this truck loading silo for Scarborough STW. The de-watered cake is pumped into the top of the silo and Saxlund’s Sliding Frame technology is used to discharge at 80m³/h into trucks.
