Biomass Handling Industry

Saxlund International has been involved with Bioenergy since the very beginning of the Companies' history in the 1940's. The very first flat bottom silo was designed and patented in 1947 and this was necessary to feed wet sawdust and woodchips to the first Saxlund biomass furnaces that were developed during the same period. Since this time, the very name SAXLUND has become synonymous with fuel and ash handling equipment designed for the biomass industry.


Due to our in-house UK engineering team and our Group support Saxlund can deliver a variety of projects in the UK, from small single hoppers to feed composting or pelleting plants to large multi-million pound materials handling systems for dedicated biomass energy plants.


With our industry leading products, the Saxlund Push Floor, Sliding Frame and TubeFeeder® we are the first port of call for project developers as we have the track record, and engineering team to provide robust systems.


Today, we manufacture a hot gas generator designed to use wet timber residues as the fuel. These units are the heart of our biomass energy installations but they are also supplied to a number of boiler manufacturers. Our fuel and ash handling expertise is in demand for biomass energy installations worldwide.

Current Projects

Markinch Biomass CHP

The fuel reception and storage system for the 50We dedicated Biomass CHP project for the Tullis Russell Paper Mill. Saxlund's scope of supply comprised the Wood Chip Reception Units, disc screens, three 19m diameter concrete silos with Rotary TubeFeeder® dischargers and chain conveyors. This multi-million pound contract is being developed with Canning Conveyors, who are supplying the transfer belt conveyors. Saxlund International are working for Jacobs with the end client being RWE Npower.



Previous Projects

Didcot Power Station

Saxlund International UK won the contract to supply a biomass handling system for the biomass co-combustion system at Didcot Power Station in Oxfordshire. The scheme incorporated a Saxlund Push Floor system and a large chain conveyor designed to handle a wide variety of biomass fuel materials between a wide range of feed rates.



Fiddlers Ferry Power Station

Saxlund International won the contract to deliver two floors of Push Floors, each capable of storing 1000m3 of various biomass materials. Each field of Push Floors discharged onto a Saxlund chain conveyor.



Aberthaw Power Station

Saxlund was awarded the contract to automate the biomass co-firing pilot plant at Aberthaw Power Station. The system makes use of an existing building and consists of a Push Floor flat floor bunker area which is loaded from delivery trucks and maintained full by a wheeled loader machine. The Push Floor discharges on demand and at a controlled rate, across a disc screen via a series of chain conveyors and into the existing and re-positioned fuel bunker. From here the material passes through a rotary feeder into a blow line and directly to one of Aberthaw’s three PF boilers. The control system and cabling was included within the contract.


Slough Heat & Power

Saxlund were awarded the contract to deliver a Push Floor reception machine for wood chips and four hydraulic rotors installed in the existing coal bunkers for the power station conversion to biomass fuels.
